As most of you know, Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States since 1898 and the currency is the US Dollar, the post office is from the USA, we have to use both flags, and in every event they play as usual PR's National Anthem, and after that the USA's National Anthem.... Always!!
But this next Sunday, June 11, we will decide in a election if the island will continue as a territory or as a new state for the USA. If the island becomes the 51 state, I guess it is a goodbye for PR in beauty pageants, because they will be under the USA. So I guess Zuleyka Rivera will be the last MU, Stephanie Del Valle will be the last MW, Valerie Hernández will be the last MI, and the rest of former international queens from Puerto Rico.

We'll see and may the best decision win.

Well the island has a lot of Federal (US) benefits right now, including food stamps, housing goverment help, free goverment health insurance, etc. But becoming a state many more benefits will come for the people in need, and also for the rest of us.
I am in a debate to vote this Sunday for YES (becoming a state) or voting NO, have to make up my mind pretty soon.
If YES wins, still we have to get the approval from Washington, like Alaska in 1959 & Hawaii in 1961.

Actually it is not an independent country, they are under the USA as a territory, but still remains their culture and of course they are independent to represent the island in any event: pageants, olympic games, etc.   Very Happy

Statehood won, and Governor Ricardo Rosselló is very firm and happy with the results, but is the US Congress that makes the final decision if they accept the island as the 51 state, or let them continue like up till now as a territory of the USA (Commonwealth)
