“Pink and White Terraces”
Before Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886, the Pink and White Terraces on the shores of Lake Rotomahana were considered to be the eighth Wonder of the World, and attracted tourists from far and wide. The terraces had formed over approximately 500 years, as silica rich water flowed down the hillside from boiling geysers. The water cooled and crystallised into the terraces and pools, forming giant staircases or waterfalls.
The layers of fabric in this costume represent the terraces, and the strands of pearls represent the water flowing from the geysers.

“Te Oranga o Aoteroa”
Wai is water and pounamu is greenstone Not only is New Zealand countryside beautiful shades of green but we are known as a “green” country. Approximately 40% of primary energy is from renewable energy sources in New Zealand. Approximately 80% of electricity comes from renewable energy, primarily hydropower and geothermal power. This dress represents New Zealand’s greeness The dress also turns blue in some light which represents our most valuable commodity which is water. Our water quality is declining due to intensified farming and general pollution. We’re a premium country offering a premium product and experience. We need to value these and make sure we maintain standards. The quality of this dress and its green and blue colors are a reminder to maintain the high quality of New Zealand’s image and product.

“Maui and the Fish Hook”
Maori legend has it that New Zealand was fished from the sea by the demigod Māui. Māui secretly made a fishhook from a magical ancestral jawbone and fished up the North Island of New Zealand.
To this day the North Island is known to Māori as Te Ika a Māui or Māui’s fish.
Made from fabric and gems this costume represents the depths of the ocean from where Maui fished up New Zealand. The figure of Maui is depicted on the top of the costumes hook.

“Tui”
The Tui bird is unique to New Zealand. They are easily identified by the curled white tuft under their throat. The tui is one of New Zealand's most vocal song birds, the first to start at dawn and the last to fall quiet at dusk. In Māori culture the Tui has powerful significance. They act as messengers to the gods in the heavens.

“Aotearoa’s Showgirl”
Inspired by the colours and features of New Zealand’s national flag.
The flag of New Zealand was adopted on March 24, 1902.
Its royal blue background is reminiscent of the blue sea and sky surrounding us, and the stars of the Southern Cross signify our place in the South Pacific Ocean.

“Silver Fern”
The silver fern is a powerful and emotional symbol of inspiration, identity as well as an attachment to our home land and one that all Kiwis can relate to. It has been accepted as a symbol of New Zealand’s national identity since the 1880s. To Māori, the elegant shape of the fronds stood for strength, stubborn resistance, and enduring power.

“New Zealand Coat of Arms”
The coat of arms of New Zealand is the heraldic symbol representing our South Pacific island country of New Zealand. Its design reflects New Zealand's history as a bicultural nation, with a European female figure on one side and a Māori rangatira (chief) on the other. It is most commonly seen on the front cover of our New Zealand passport.

This garment was inspired by Papatuanuku. From the colours and femininity to the flow of feathers to show the connection to our mother earth. Harakeke fibres are used throughout the garment. Harakeke is renowned for its strength when stripped down to muka, when woven, and even shredded. This was used to construct the garment and was made to be beautiful in its simplicity allowing the fibres to stand out and enhance the beauty of the wearer.

“Kowhai Flower”
Regarded by most New Zealanders as our national flower, Kowhai are among the most beautiful of our flowering trees. The Kowhai is an important seasonal nectar food source for the Tui and other native birds. Maori hold the tree in high esteem, valuing the durability of its hard wood and its many medicinal properties.

“Waitomo Caves”
Under the green hills of Waitomo lies a labyrinth of caves, sinkholes and underground rivers. The area's name comes from the Maori words wai (water) and tomo (hole). Thousands of glow-worms light up the Glowworm Caves of Waitomo making it one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist attractions.
1000’s of Swarovski Crystals on this costume represent the glow worms in the caves and the dark ruffled fabric represents the dark water (wai) that runs through the depth of the caves.
