Re: Miss Universe Jamaica 2019
Name: Fiona DaCosta- Miss Apollo Taxi Service
Age: 21
Height: 5’11”
Vital Statistics: 30-28-30
Favorite Food: Red Peas Soup with Coconut Milk
Favorite Hobbies: Reading (quotes); Creative Writing
Occupation: Law Student
Please list your scholastic awards/achievements.
Top performer in the Humanities (CAPE exams) 2016 & 2017
What will you do with your degree?
After my Law degree I intended to go to Law school and subsequently called to the Bar to practice Law.
Biography:
Fiona DaCosta is a 21-year-old second year student of Law at the University of the West Indies Mona. She is guided by the assertion: "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." Fiona's constant variables in a world of ever changing values are: beauty, education, integrity. She believes that her beauty is beyond skin deep. Rather, it entails her confidence, good thoughts for others and her originality. For Fiona, education is imperative and should be treated as such. She loves her Law courses that are human rights centred and believes that as an aspiring lawyer she may put majority of her focus in that area. Her integrity is her conscience and as someone who enjoys a good night's rest, she prides herself in being objective, disciplined and courteous.
Life’s Ambition:
My life's ambition is to motivate, inspire and build people in a way that they can believe in themselves especially if they struggle with self-doubt. In the same vein, I am particularly ambitious about uplifting and getting others to shine to the best of their abilities.
Volunteer Work:
I volunteered in my community when I was younger (primary aged). I would teach and assist the community children with homework. At Camperdown High School, I volunteered at the Nursing Department, assisting with first aid. At the University of the West Indies, Mona, I volunteer at the Office for students with Special Needs. I assist said students to and from classes, do not taking, research and typing and generally with the day to day maneuvering of the campus.
Cause that’s Close to your Heart and why?
Yes, indeed. I am passionate about seeing youth believe in themselves, becoming role models and escaping the " won't come out to anything good " prophecy over their lives. This is dear to me because I see a lot of this especially in rural Jamaica where children are expected to finish up school by grade eleven and go seek a job. I see situations where young girls are expected to get pregnant and discontinue their schooling. Likewise, instances where young men are expected to " get a youth " by a certain age and display toxic levels of masculinity. These are real life situations that many persons my age and younger battle with. I want that to change. I want the youth to grasp opportunities knowing that they are worthy enough to have them.
What kind of change do you want to see in the world of women?
In the world of women, I want to see a change in how women view themselves. I want the view that
women ought to be domesticated beings whose purpose is solely to wash, cook, clean and give sexual gratification to their significant other to change. I want women to lead in spaces outside the home. I want women to change the notion that they are the inferior sex. See the genders as equal. The world of women should change, so women even after having children still pursue their goals and aspirations and not see child rearing as an impassable obstacle.
What are your five-year goals?
To start a foundation geared towards motivating, inspiring and challenging youth to be the best positive versions of themselves. (Nation building/giving back).
What are three (3) Fun Facts about you?
1). I like to wear my hair in Bantu Knots/Chiney Bumps.
2). I often times try on clothes in my closet and imagine the perfect place and occasion that the outfits would suit. I do this while posing and playing fitting songs in front the mirror.
3). My best time spent on the internet is when I'm reading and interpreting quotes.
What motivated you to enter the pageant?
My motivation to enter the pageant came from self-introspection. I realized that I love pageantry even though it was not one of the things that my mentors encouraged like they would with leadership, good grades etc. I came to the conclusion after entering Miss UWI Mona 2019 (2nd runner up) that pageants come with a lot of things that I personally value. For example: confidence, representation, intelligence, sisterhood, poise, discipline, self-care etc. I decided that I wanted to challenge myself at another level while building more on the aforementioned likes.
Who is your hero?
My hero is my Dad; Aaron DaCosta.
What is your most unusual experience?
My most unusual experience was when a good friend of mine went I'll as he suffered a mental breakdown. I assisted his sister in locating him when he ran off to the streets. A few weeks later he recovered from an episode of acute psychosis.
What is your proudest personal accomplishment (Not Pageant Related)?
My proudest personal accomplishment is being the first of my immediate family and from my community to be enrolled at the University of the West Indies.
What is your absolute favorite place/attraction in Jamaica that you have visited?
I dont have an absolute favourite place/attraction in Jamaica (yet)
