Re: MISS WORLD 2009 - OFFICIAL COVERAGE - 10/12
A statement from Miss England organisers said Miss Christie, 21, had stepped down as she wanted to concentrate on clearing her name.
It was later announced that L/Cpl Hodge, who was first runner-up in the 2009 national contest, has become the new Miss England. L/Cpl Hodge has been given leave from her duties as a soldier in the British Army and will represent England in the Miss World Final in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday December 12.
She was previously given an award by her unit in the Royal Anglian Regiment for her actions during a posting in Basra and has earned the nickname ''Combat Barbie''.

Ashanna goes for Miss World crown
Ashanna left for Johannesburg on November 5, but will stop off in London first, where all 120 girls from across the globe will journey to Johannesburg. She said she is taking with her the spirit of the people of this country, their warmth and friendliness and the qualities which make us unique. Ashanna is an accomplished pianist, which she hopes will lead her to win the Miss World Talent Fast Track event. She spends her time working feverishly in the gym to ensure that she captures the Miss World Beach Beauty Fast Track event. A win in any of these fast track events would automatically guarantee a top 15 finish for Ashanna. But beyond that, Ashanna wants to share the beauty of her twin island paradise with the rest of the world. Ashanna said that besides being the fulfilment of a lifelong dream, winning the Miss World title in Johannesburg would mean restoring national pride to TT.
“Winning the crown would mean restoring some much needed national pride to my country. It would also mean that our legacy of excellence at Miss World and Miss Universe would remain intact. It has been 23 years since our first and only Miss World title and I don’t intend on letting a 24th pass without securing a victory for my country.
“ In the light of the worsening global financial crisis, it would also present me with an opportunity to promote the tourism sector of this country to the rest of the world and strengthen tourism as a viable and marketable commodity,” Ashanna said.

120 Miss World nations bring gifts to London for special auction
Amazing Miss World prizes revealed
It was announced last month that November 9 will see the Miss World contestants fly in to London for a very special event to begin the five week festival leading up to the final in South Africa.
The Miss World Charity Dinner will bring all 120 finalists to London for a night of International fundraising and world class entertainment. During the event will be a unique auction. All 120 young ladies will donate an exclusive gift from their home country.
Jamaica’s Kerrie Baylis will be bringing some signed running shoes from fellow countryman Usain Bolt. The sprinter is a three time Olympic gold medallist and the fastest man of all time holding world records for both the 100m and 200m events.
Another sporting gift comes from Trinidad and Tabago’s Ashanna Arthur who will offer a signed cricket bat from the legendary Brian Lara. Lara, who is widely regarded as the best batsman of all time, holds the records for the highest individual score in first-class cricket and the highest individual score in a test innings.
England’s Rachel Christie has provided autographed memorabilia from Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie and a 3 night luxury spa break in the UK. Bahamas’ Joanna Brown has donated an amazing holiday for two with flights and accommodation to her home country. And Russia’s Ksenia Shipilova has added a special hand-painted Miss World Russian doll to the array of spectacular prizes on offer.
Other gifts include; an emu-caller from Australia, a traditional dress from Romania, a Slovak doll from Slovakia, Swarovski earrings from Belgium, official medals of the FIFA World Cup 2006 from Germany, a gold nugget plaque from Guyana, a Celtic cushion from Ireland, and a handmade necklace from Venezuela.
Each guest attending the dinner will be in with a chance of winning these amazing prizes and the many more from all other Miss World countries.
All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Variety International Children’s Fund and the event hopes to raise $1 million to support medical, nutritional and educational programmes in South Africa, Haiti, Palau, Philippines, Ghana and India.

Miss World 2009 Group Challenge announced
Miss World will showcase South Africa’s efforts to save their most endangered species
This year the Miss World contestants will be divided into four groups as part of The Miss World Group Challenge. Each group will be named after endangered species that inhabit South Africa. During the challenge the groups will learn about their threatened species and visit the incredible conservation projects and facilities across South Africa that are helping to save them from extinction.
These will also be the official groups for the Miss World Sports Woman fast-track event. This has become one of the most popular events in the Miss World calendar. The contestants take part in a series of challenges that test their agility and sporting endeavour. The World Sports Woman is a one of five fast-track events, with the winner reaching the Miss World semi-final.
Black Rhinos - The Black Rhino group will visit the famous Legends Resort World Heritage site in Johannesburg. The huge reserve - which holds the endangered Black Rhino as well as thousands of other species - boasts five full eco-systems. The upper escarpment offers majestic craggy rock formations and wide open grass plains while the lower plateau, which is separated from the upper region by 600m high cliffs, is nearly three degrees warmer and consists of sandy wetlands where the rare black rhinos have settled.
King African Penguins - The King African Penguin group will visit the picturesque Boulders Beach near Cape Town, a World Heritage Site for birds. Here they will support the conservation project for the Boulder’s own colony of African Penguins, one of only two places in the world that the colonies still exist.
Marshall Eagles - The Marshall Eagle group will be given a unique opportunity to encounter these birds at a special bird of prey rehabilitation centre for endangered species. The long-term vision of the centre, which is based near Cape Town, is helping to preserve the eco-environment by protecting birds of prey. This is achieved through the re-release of rehabilitated birds back into the wild, and creating community awareness of birds of prey.
Cheetahs - The Miss World Cheetahs will meet a group of hand-raised cheetahs in the care of the Cheetah Sanctuary’s amazing Cheetah Outreach Programme in the Spier Resort near Cape Town. The main aim of the programme is to raise funds, ensure the survival of the cheetah and where possible breed cheetah in captivity and promote co-operation between facilities in South Africa.
