Ruth Ocumárez (born Ruth Amelia Ocumárez Apataño 1983 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a former beauty queen, actress and model.
Born and raised in Santo Domingo, Ocumárez became a celebrity in her nation by becoming the first woman of predominantly African heritage to represent the Dominican Republic in the Miss Universe pageant. Due to her dark complexion and personality, she was given the nickname la diosa de ébano (the Ebony Goddess) by the Dominican public and press.

At the 2002 Miss Universe pageant, held in Puerto Rico, Ocumárez was predicted by many to be chosen as one of the semifinalists. But she was not selected, causing many internet users and bloggers to coin the term the Ruth Ocumárez Award to signify a pageant contestant who seems guaranteed to be selected as a finalist, but does not make the list at the end.

After her reign was over, Ocumárez entered the world of modeling and appeared in many Dominican, European, and Puerto Rican periodicals. She also branched out into acting, starring in the Dominican film Perico Ripiao. Besides her work in film, Ocumárez also has experience as a television hostess on Puerto Rican television.
It was reported in 2007 that Ocumárez had become engaged to flamboyant entertainment personality Sixto Nolasco. Nolasco, who was interviewed by journalist Carmen Jovet declared that he was "tired of being gay," and that he intends to start a family with his new wife. As of January 2008, there has been no date date for the proposed nuptials.

Now most of you knows why THE RUTH OCUMAREZ AWARD exist since 2002.

She was the most overhyped candidate at MU 2002, also many people made their bets that she was going to be the winner, but sadly she did not even made it thru the Top-15. Pity!!

in 2002 internet is not yet popular in our place since we're in the mountainous area

so i didnt witness how pageant fan really like her that time

but isnt it ironic??? the following year Dominican Republic won Smile

She was always one of the girls to beat, even in Puerto Rico she had more fans than Isis Casalduc MPRU 2002, and yes next year.... BOOM!! Dominicans grabbed the crown. Odd, isn't it?
