2003 - Sanja Papic Interview for The Perfect Miss
We would like to introduce to our readers, one of the most important icons of Serbian pageantry, here with you, the unforgettable Miss Universe 2003's 3rd runner, the gorgeous, Sanja Papic.
- You are so beautiful, so pretty, was becoming a beauty queen a childhood dream?
Thank you:-) Beauty queen is a natural dream of any girl, without even being aware of it. As a child I went to balley and since then I felt comfortable with stage, actually it was my favorite place... By time, this love was growing and I would say that by pure love to stage destiny brought me to the world of beauty queens. .
- What motivated you to participate in beauty contests?
I started modeling since I was 14...locally , since I was still a child and went to high school . When I was 17 I was just a regular guest at one beauty pageant in my home town, Novi Sad and thats when and where I met organizers of Miss Serbia contest... That's how it all began.
- During those times, who was your role model?
I adore Naomi Campbell's catwalk.
- Of all your relatives who was the most supportive?
My parents were amazing and all my family. My father was always a great advisor and my mother was giving me unlimited support. They have always followed me at the events I participated and giving me great support and love. They believed in me and respected my dreams.
- How important was your family support for your victory in Miss Yugoslavia 2002?
I would say they are basic of my success. Knowing that they have great confidence in me was a great power to build my dreams. It gave me space to concentrate on making them true.
- What did you like the most of being Miss Yugoslavia 2002?
Winning Miss Yugoslavia for Miss Universe was a ticket to the most beautiful professional experience... To Miss Universe.
- And what didn't you like?
I loved each part of this experience...dreams coming truth but also breaking illusions are both priceless experiences and responsibility you are taking makes you grow over the night. I loved it, enjoyed it and life was giving me important lessons each day... And still does.
- What personal sacrifices have you made so far in preparing for Miss Universe 2003?
Actually it was a last year of high school so I was pretty busy by giving all my exams before the rest of my generation, but still I was regularly going to school even two days before my trip to Panama. It was such a busy and intensive period, since I am from Novi Sad which is 80km far from Belgrade where all the shootings and preparations were... So I was very active but at the same time I enjoyed it so much.
- Was that your first time in Latin America?, what impression do you have about Panama and its people?
I was very young and it was my first intercontinental flight. I fell in love with Latin America by the first moment ... Panama and its people made me one of favorites in Miss Universe, Latin America made me win top 5 and ill always bring Panama and its people in my heart. It was just amazing. Latin America and its people celebrate beauty in a unique way.
- After Miss Universe, have you returned there? and how does it feel?
Year after Miss Universe in Panama, I went to Ecuador and 3 years later to Venezuela. Years after my Miss Universe title they were still celebrating it in such a beautiful passionate way. Each time I went there I was welcomed as a "princess" . I adore Latin America.
- How did your 3rd runner up place in Miss Universe 2003 change your life?
For sure that's the point when my professional life was created. By night I was recognized in each part of the world. Miss Universe has a great publicity all over the world. my face and name was written in Chinese, Japanese and In all world languages... Biggest dreams came true and I entered to a wonderland of unique experiences, people, places, knowledge... I appreciate each part of it.
- Which job proposals did you receive and which ones did you accept?
They were many... And I am workaholic :-) I was lucky to have good proposals and to travel all around the world .Beside my career I also studied so last 10 years were pretty productive and I would love to continue in that way. Last year I spent few months in Los Angeles where i went to acting school.
- How was the experience of working with Cavalli?
He was my great "guru". Being next to such a great name in fashion and being part of his team is a priceless experience. I was learning a lot and he opened me doors of show business in its highest level. I do and I always will appreciate that.
- You are one of the most successful models of Serbia, and an icon in Serbian pageantry, so why did you decide to become a singer?
I loved to sing since I was a child, but still my intension by bringing out the first single was not to become a singer.. It was just a nice occasion to do something like that 10 years after Miss Yugoslavia title... Name of song is "Yugoslovenka" which means "Yugoslavian girl"...it's an old, great hit from '80s, performed originally by artist Pedja d boy who is my dear friend. So it was a lots of fun and I enjoyed it. Do you like it?
- Tell us a little bit about Sanja Papic, the fashion designer...
A month ago a got proposal from Miss Yu Company and fashion company Il Cuore Italiano to sign a collection. I feel very happy and excited about it. Our collection is gonna be made of quality materials but at the same time will have very low prices and will be affordable to each lady. I am working with a team of designers and we are all very excited about the upcoming collection which will be in market beginning of June.
- In this month you are announcing that you will organize Miss Vojvodine which will be a preliminary pageant for Miss Serbia. What motivated you to become a pageant organizer? What are your plans on this, your first beauty pageant?
Vojvodina is a big northern region in Serbia. Novi Sad is my hometown and capital of Vojvodina. Girls from Vojvodina are famous by its beauty and usually are among top 3 at Miss Serbia final. For me it is a big challenge to organize this beauty pageant. I was Miss Vojvodina 2002, too. I'll do my best to put together all my experience, ideas and dreams and to organize a spectacular event. What I appreciate a lot is that Mayor and City Hall of Novi Sad officially supported me. It will be in the open space in the Main Square in Novi Sad ( Trg Slobode ). My wish is to promote Novi Sad in its best and of course the girls as ambassadors of beauty and young generation. Having 11 years experience that title of "Miss" is bringing with ,is one of the main roles I'm gonna use to organize this event and make both girls and guests happy. Winner of Miss Vojvodina will directly participate in Miss Serbia final and have an opportunity to become Miss Serbia. You are very welcome to join us on August 31st :-)
