This photo was published on 6^th June, four months before the final night. Five judges sought to pick this year’s Miss Norway. They judged six contestants and narrowed the field down to two, both lovely “typical Norwegian blondes.” Finally, the choice fell on 22-year-old Miss Synnove Gulbrandsen (left) of Oslo who participated in Miss Universe 1953. First to give her a congratulatory big hug and kiss was the runner-up – her identical twin sister Solveig (right) who will participate in Miss World 1953.

This photo was published on 15^th October, four days before the final night. This pretty girl responds to the sweet name of Manuel Illangakoon. She was recently elected Miss Ceylon (Sri Lanka). His compatriots have a taste! She will participate in the next Miss World contest, which will take place in London.

This photo was published on 16^th October, three days before the final night. Miss Egypt, Marina Papaelia, today donned her scantiest bikini, ambled into a smoke-filled nightclub, and was hustled away by scandalized management before press photographers could get her in focus. Then changed to something more substantial before again joining 14 other international beauties. Miss Holland (Netherlands), Yvonne Meyer, was ill with flu. Most composed of the girls today was the Miss U.S.A., Mary Griffin, 23, a Los Angeles model who appeared in a dazzling white swimsuit.
