From left to right, Miss Hong Kong, Virginia June Lee was the second runner-up (3^rd place); Miss Brazil, Marta Rocha was the first runner-up (2^nd place); Miss Germany, Regina Ernst was the third runner-up (4^th place) and Miss Sweden, Ragnhild Olausson was fourth runner-up (5^th place).

She not only was voted the world’s most beautiful woman but also got back her luggage, lost ever since she arrived here a week ago yesterday. She said her victory came as a complete surprise to her. “When I came here I wanted very much to win, but when I saw all these beautiful girls from all over the world all I could do was hope.”

This photo was published on 24th July, one day after the final night. Miss U.S.A., Miriam Stevenson was chosen as Miss Universe 1954. She is 21-year-old, blonde and grew up on a dairy farm. Last year, she was one of 10 finalists in the Miss America contest. She is the youngest daughter of two older brothers and a sister, all married. Contest rules prohibit one contestant from winning two cars, the second went to the first runner-up Miss Brazil, Marta Rocha.

This photo was published on 24th July, one day after the final night. These four contestants also had merits. After the results, they spoke to the press and expressed their disappointment. Miss Thailand, Amora Asavananda (1st from left) said: "They didn't like my country and neither did the color of my skin." Miss Chile, Gloria Leguisos (2nd from left) was happy for the second place obtained by the Brazilian Marta Rocha. She also said: "California wines are not good ... I'd better go back to drinking the delicious Chilean wines." Miss Israel, Aviva Pe'er (3rd from left) said: "I feel so unhappy ... I would have liked to bring the title to my country so much." Miss Hong Kong, Virginia, June Lee (1st from right) was the only one in this group who was satisfied with the results after being the second runner-up (3rd place).

This photo was published on 25th July, two days after the final night. Two extra inches on the hips cost Miss Brazil, Marta Rocha the Miss Universe title. Miss Brazil measures 36 inches at the bust, 23 at the waist and 38 at the hips. Miss U.S.A, Miriam Stevenson has the perfect measurements: 36-23-36.

Miss Universe 1954, Miriam Stevenson (centre) and her two runners-up, Miss Brazil, Marta Rocha (left) and Miss Hong Kong, Virginia June Lee (right) are shown holding aloft the movie contract to which they were signed yesterday by Universal-International studios. Miss Universe got a 6-month contract and Miss Brazil and Miss Hong Kong each got 13-week contracts.

This photo was published on 1^st August, nine days after the final night. Miss Connecticut, Andrea Todd is very happy because she was better than she expected after classifying in the top 20 of Miss U.S.A. Everyone treated each girl as she were queen and that’s what she loved most about this pageant.
 
Miss Connecticut’s favourite contestant to win was Miss Brazil, Marta Rocha. They were roommates, Miss Brazil didn’t speak English, but Miss Connecticut acted as her interpreter most of the time.

Miss Canada, Joyce Landry, has an opinion all her own about Hollywood and she describes it this way: “It’s a hovel of big-time, small-time, all-time phonics”. Joyce returned to her home in Toronto after 12 weeks of Hollywood, Las Vegas and Long Beach, subsequent to her entry in the Miss Universe 1954 contest. She earned $1,050 during the 12 weeks of appearing in night clubs and making a short movie, but she has only $25 to show for her effort when she returned home. “I’m not going back to Hollywood and I’m glad I gave no one my home address,’ says Joyce.
