Four of the 72 foreign and American entries in the Miss Universe pageant relax before the contest gets under way at Long Beach, California. At top, Miss Ecuador, Mercedes Flores (left) and Miss Louisiana, Ecelle Morris, are shown in a hotel pool. At bottom, Miss Greece, Rita Gouma (left) and Miss Germany, Mariana Orschel (right), pair up to blow out the candles to celebrate their birthdays. Miss Greece reaches her 19^th year and Miss Germany, her 20^th.
