1st September 1939 - Germany invades Poland

Seventy-three years ago today, months of brown-nosing Hitler’s Nazis by the winners of World War One – Britain, France and America AKA the Western Powers – resulted not in a safer Europe but in the Invasion of Poland, when, at 4.45 am, 1.5 million German troops, ably abetted by hundreds of screaming Stuka dive-bombers, stormed across the Polish frontiers from the north, south and west, destroying from the air much of the country’s considerable air force before its pilots had time even to get airborne. In Polish towns and villages, the Nazis ensured that maximum civic disruption would be caused when all local intellectuals and authority figures – the mayor, the teachers, librarians, etc. – were rounded up and removed, later to be shot without trials. Within weeks, the equally ruthless Joseph Stalin would send into Eastern Poland his own Soviet tanks and troops, like a belligerent carrion crow determined to wrestle away his own portion of the lion’s victim.
Nazi Germany’s expansion had begun in 1938 with the annexation of Austria and continued with the occupation of the Sudetenland and then all of Czechoslovakia in 1939. Despite various allied pacts and agreements, these invasions were allowed to occur without resistance or challenge from the world’s major powers. Hitler therefore proceeded with his plan to conquer Poland – which was key to his vision of Lebensraum or “living space” for the German people. According to his plan, the “racially superior” Germans would colonise the territory and the natives would be enslaved.

Hitler gambled that his invasion of Poland would, like Czechoslovakia, be accomplished without igniting hostilities with the major powers. Two days later, Britain and France could no longer maintain their policy of appeasement and acquiescence and declared war on Germany.
World War II had begun.

That day will always stay in polish minds... Thank God I didn't have to live in those times. My grandparents had to...fortunately they survived

My dad lived through the war but he was a baby and had no memories, his older brother remembered many things but he did not want to talk about it!
When the Germans left Greece in 1945 they destroyed everything roads, train rails, schools, hospitals and 30% of Greeks died during the war!
Alll the gold from the National Treasury along with many antiquities were stolen and shipped to Germany!
The worst was that the fields were burned and animals such us sheep and cows were killed so there was no food!
In fact there were not even seeds to plant the field!
People in the big cities suffered from hunger! Many died especially kids under 3 years old!
Athens winter 1941-1942
The Germans invated Greece in April 6 1941, before that Italy has invated us in October 28 1940 but the Greek army won!
The worst moments of the war were the massacres in Kalavrita and Diakofto were thoushads of men and boys beteween 13-70 years old were executed ,while the villages were burrned left the orphans and widows to die from hunger and the cold!
And allthough times have changed the ''big'' countries have found other more insidious, ways to invade smaller ones.... history seems to repeat itself!

It's frightening how many people died! Over 60 million people were killed, which was over 2.5% of the world population!
In Poland before the war lived 35 100 000 people. After 1945 only 23 929 000.

I think sometimes how many talented people were lost, perhaps someone more talented than Picasso or smarter than Einstein!How different would the world be??
