The transition from Miss Universe to Mrs. Donald Upton is relatively gradual. She is continuing her television work at Columbia station WIS-TV where her husband is chief announcer.
 
After winning, her sudden switch from the world’s reigning beauty to a South Carolina college girl made headlines at the time. But those who knew Miriam best weren’t too surprised. She wears very little makeup and displays a frankness of manner incompatible with the pretense and tinsel standards that abound in the movie Mecca.
 
A studio colleague of Miriam’s mused as follows: “If any girl in the country could be said to have gone through the strain of becoming Miss Universe without noticeable change, it would be Miriam.”
