This photo was published on 18th July, seven days before the final night. Miss Costa Rica, Eugenia Valverde, was disqualified because one of the rules of the contest specifies that candidates must have been born on July 19th, 1940 or before. All this was due to what happened last year with the current Miss Universe, Miss Peru Gladys Zender, who was 17 years and 7 months old at that time. Oscar Meinhardt, director of the Miss Universe pageant, said: “I blame the sponsors in Costa Rica entirely” because they did not demand any age-related requirements. “She, because of her honesty, is a credit to her country.” She will be able to participate in all activities as an honored guest, but not in the preliminaries.
