Miss Namibia Seeks Financial Support
WINDHOEK – Namibian beauty queen Happie Ntelamo is looking for funds to attend the Miss Universe and Miss World pageants.
The 58th Miss Universe pageant will be held at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas, on August 23, where 86 countries and territories will compete for the title and the pageant.
The 20-year-old Ntelamo from Katima Mulilo in Caprivi clinched the diamond-studded gold crown after a panel of nine judges unanimously voted her as Miss Namibia 2009 last month.
Ntelamo needs at least N$100 000 for each of the pageants. Miss Namibia pageant organiser, Connie Maritz, said on Tuesday they are doing everything possible to raise funds to send Ntelamo to Miss Universe.
Maritz said Ntelamo herself is spearheading the campaign to raise money for the pageant, with one of the events being a gala dinner scheduled for July 25, to which companies and individuals are being asked to book tables to fund the trip.
“She is such a beautiful girl and it is a beautiful representation for Namibia at international level,” she said.
In the past, the reigning queens also raised some funds, which were supplemented by the pageant depending on the amount raised.
Due to the global recession this year, Maritz said there are no funds to give for international pageants.
Swapo Party Youth League secretary, Elijah Ngurare, has urged companies and parastatals to avail funds for Ntelamo.
Ngurare said the SPYL has learned that the newly crowned Miss Namibia is struggling to raise funds necessary for her to participate in the Miss Universe and ultimately Miss World pageants.
He said the reason for the lack of funds was that Ntelamo was black and not white, therefore many private companies were reluctant to support her.
“Whatever the case may be SPYL calls on all corporate citizens of our country to make funds available for the youthful ambassador of Namibia. All parastatals of government have the patriotic duty to follow suit,” he said.
Ngurare added: “Let it be our national duty and obligation to support our Miss Namibia.”

Help Miss Namibia
By Andreas Thomas
Windhoek — With less than two weeks to go before the 2009 Miss Universe finals in Bahamas, Miss Namibia 2009, Happie Ntelamo, is yet to secure sponsorship to enable her compete in the beauty pageant.
Ntelamo is expected to represent Namibia at the 58th Miss Universeat on August 23 but currently does not have enough money to undertake the trip.
However, Ntelamo is optimistic that with fundraising campaigns underway they would be able to raise funds for her trip to the Caribbean island.
"I can’t wait to go represent Namibia at such a global event and I am counting on the goodwill of fellow Namibians, especially the corporate sector," said Ntelamo, a final year law student at the University of Namibia.
She said they would keep on knocking on doors for support.
On Thursday, Ntelamo paid a courtesy call to Namibian Prime Minister Nahas Angula to brief the premier about the upcoming Miss Universe pageant and her work in general as reigning Miss Namibia.
In an unfortunate twist, a gala dinner that was planned for Saturday, July 25 at the Windhoek Country Club to raise funds for Ntalemo was called off.
About 87 countries and territories will compete for the Miss Universe title.
Namibia was last represented by Anna Nashandi, who competed at Miss Universe in 2006 in Los Angeles, USA.
