After a part of the competition I have to alter my top 20: I put away Poland, Curacao, Luxembourg and Zambia and instead of them I added Slovakia (she is magnificent!), Canada (her singing was wonderfull), Japan and Mexico (I don't like them so much but I respect them as finalists) I do respect also Siera Leone, but I don't have any idea who should I change her for. I have to get more time to decide this.

My Final Prediction of Miss World 2009
This could be one of those years that the contest could suspend all our anticipation till the last minute. So far four of the fast-track event winners have been selected (there are joint winners in Talent competition). Except Mexico, who is currently the hottest on the Internet, the other four are all surprising dark horses. It's true that Sports and Talent usually give this type of girls, but how about Beach Beauty? It's the first time since 2006 that this directive event is not won by an odds-on favorite. And the rest of the Top5 are almost some comparatively less expected girls. It seems that Julia Morley wants to attract all world's eyes by setting such puzzle for us at the very last pageant of this year, as well as this decade. So what would be the answers?
There was rumor that the semi-final entry is to be added up to 20, which however is not yet confirmed by the official site. What I want to say is even with the expansion I do not think the decision-making might get any easier since we have another record entry of 112, almost doubles the usual one of Miss International, and this bunch of girls are of really high calibre; if you keep watching these days you will find it.
Then what am I gonna do to make a shrewd forecast?
Well, last year, if you still remember, all Top15 semi-finalists had placed in the fast-track events. Simply add up all contestants' achievements in those competitions together, you will find the 15 leading girls are almost the Top15 eventually chosen for the final. So this time I decided also to do such an addition and see whether it would turn out to be the same (perhaps it may become a norm for Miss World prediction in the future). However, I have to keep in mind that sometimes there're expections, say Australia in 2006 and Angola in 2007. Neither of them placed in the pre-final contests but both placed in the final Top3. In such cases, we may find the externals also play such an crucial part in the judging. So I reconsidered some outsiders' chances and then made some daring decision. Will it be sensible?
In no particualr order, here are my prediction for Miss World 2009 Top16.
Barbados: Leah Marville (24, 5'8") amazes the world! I mean who ever imagined this little country could prepare such a mega beauty who deserves really serious consideration of many pageant pundits? She has made her presence felt in the fierce rivalry with her nice placement in both Beach Beauty and Top Model. If you focus more on her brain and refinement, you won't be disappointed at her poised-manner in the web video. My current choice for the Queen of Caribbean.
Vietnam: When talking about Huong Giang's (22, 5'10") prospect of making a Top16 some time earlier we might accept the truth that her country is gonna host the pageant next year could really say something. However, right now it seems that even with that barely considered, this Top Model 1st runner-up can still make her way to the final and vie for a even bigger package, say Queen of Asia Pacific. It's undeniable that Huong is well-regarded the best Vietnamese in Miss World since her creditable performances simply proved it. With that Miss-World-goes-for look and very genial personality, this girl should be seriously watched out for.
Scotland: Katharine Brown (22, 6'0") outshines the other blondes since she is the only one of them placing in both Beach Beauty and Top Model and provided the jury want another blonde to be crowned Miss World, she'll be the one to beat. Some people say she is a new Rosanna Davison, having an absolutely gorgeous face, svelte figure and something else shared by the other three blonde winners this decade (03, 06, 08). A very likely choice for the continental queen as well as Top3.
France: From Miss Universe to Miss World, Chloe Mortaud (20, 5'11") has always been my favorite. It's worth mentioning that she didn't start very well, out of her best form, but she recovered fascinatingly well and re-became that tough contender who, if everything works out, can beat some really strong rivals and achieve the long-awaited win. If we could, I wish Chloe could join Scotland in the Top3. But if that is too hard, I prefer her getting her place there and even winning it all if she is bound to enjoy such a generous treat.
South Africa: Once again, Tatum Keshwar (25, 5'11") doesn't perform as well as I expected her to. Or she actually did but just because the contention is damn fierce, so my fuss is probably not fair at all. The good news for her is overall there's still no such elite force in Africa who can rival her although there did emerge some great potential these days. Since she represents the host country, she's very likely to win back Queen of Africa but I don't feel the odds that she'll place among Top3.
Panama: Supposing you're an observant Miss World watcher, this girl probably has become one of your big concerns now. Nadege Herrera (23, 6'0") is a major surprise this year. She is not exceedingly beautiful, but she triumphantly stole the show in Beach Beauty and grabbed a very valuable place almost to ensure her spot in the final (in history, all Beach Beauty first runner-up became finalists except in 2005 when the Top12 were decided by public vote). She is not my cup of tea, but recalling last year's Angola with a similar situation who worked it, I finally convinced myself of her great prospect.
Jamaica: Kerrie Baylis' (21, 5'11") notable performances in the pre-final events has compromised my uncertainty about her. And if you go back and review Jamaica's achievements in Miss World, you may find this country is really favored (they obtained three crowns in the 58-year-long history) by the committee. Kerrie, to be blant, is not gorgeous enough to stand out. I am not her fan but my guts feeling tells me to keep an close eye on her. A likely semi-finalist but I don't think she gets to be a big threat in the final contention.
Korea: The first sight of Joori Kim (21, 5'7") at the Global Tourism Award made me feel this would be her year. I expected her to get her final slot by winning the Talent event considering her learning experience of ballet in Russia, whose achievement in this field really marks some high level. Unfortunately, she failed. But finishing at a very creditable place along with a Top12 in Beach Beauty is enough to trade for a place in the final. This is also the first time Korea flies a winner to Miss World. Taking it into consideration, I think she also has great chance to win the continental queen.
Puerto Rico: Jennifer Colon's (21, 5'9") failure in Top Model is a little confusing to me. But judging from the photos coming out later, it becomes somewhat understandable (look at her aweful dress-up). Despite this unexpected defeat, we have to admit that she actually shines in the pageant, taking many webs leading positions and well received as another odds-on favorite. She has great winning potential, however, compared with some of her top rivals, her beauty is a bit thin and sometimes her smile is also somewhat vacant. If this is just my illusion and the judges actually like her, we can also put her into the reckoning.
Belarus: This girl has it all, but meanwhile, she has nothing. I mean she's absolutely gorgeous but the truth is she did fail both major contests which conventionally decide everything. A former Miss International 2nd runner-up, Yulia Sindzeyeva's (22, 5'11") poor performance doesn't come up to my expectations. There're actually some other girls who did better than her and seems more secure making to the final but I still believe her superb beauty could be her last hope. I wish she gets in.
India: The very last spot is considered to give to the mysterious winner of Beauty with a Purpose, so the beauty factor seems not so decisive here. Recently I read an article describing Pooja Chopra's (24, 5'8") hard life as well as some charity she has done over the years. It struck me and made me start to focus on this girl and reconsider her prospect. Incidentally, hours ago I was informed that India's very own Miss World Priyanka Chopra will present at this year's final. It might sound dramatic that this adds to Pooja's chance but you can't deny there's possibility. So don't be so surprised if she really gets it.
And the five announced semi-finalists:
Japan: Japan's long drought in Miss World is ended by this plain-looking athelete. Although Eruza Sasaki (21, 5'9") doesn't look appealing to me, I should say every now and then she does remind me of Riyo Mori with her appreciative fashion taste. But apparently she lacks that eye-catching exterior so I don't feel by any chance a miracle will happen to her.
Canada: I did expect Lena Ma (22, 5'11") to struggle for a final position but never did I believe she could really make it, especially by winning a wild card. This girl actually has some very creditable merits: she's tall, elegant and smart. Also I like her because of her Chinese background. It's a pity that she did win a place in Beach Beauty or Top Model which may adds more to her package but there might be something about her to attract the judges so we may also see her as a potential contender for Queen of Americas.
Sierra Leone: A joint winner in Talent competition, Mariatu Kargbo (24, 5'8") as well has some "kinship" with China. Her worship for the country aside, she won the Talent just with the traditional Chinese artistry, the renowned Face Changing in Sichuan Opera. Regarded as a big competitor against South Africa, she does have her own forte to go for a bigger win. One should not be overlooked.
Gibraltar: A big big surprise. The astounding success of Kaiane Aldorino (23, 5'9") forced many people to their attitude toward her. Upon my words, her tanned complexion and toned figure did help her win an advantage in the Beach Beauty final but otherwise I don't think she can possibly beat some more reliable front-runners and make to the next deal.
Mexico: Forgive me and my selfishness, sometimes I would wish Perla Beltran (23, 5'10") came very close to the crown, simply because she's absolutely stunning, but never really won it. So every year we get to see superior ladies from this country to strive for their very first Miss World and I know their endeavor will not cease until they bring it home. That would so blissful for us watchers! However, Perla's charm is so strong and compelling and I know I will feel so bad if she fails. Winning the Top Model could be a good omen for her since the prize holders in 2007 and 2008 both went on to be the eventual winner. I hope there could be another repetation for her.
Top16 and Continental Queens:
Asia Pacific: Vietnam (Korea, India, Japan)
Europe: France (Scotland, Belarus, Gibraltar)
Caribbean: Barbados (Puerto Rico, Jamaica)
Americas: Mexico (Canada, Panama)
Africa: South Africa (Sierra Leone)
Top7: Scotland, Puerto Rico, Vietnam, South Africa
2nd runner-up: France
1st runner-up: Barbados
Miss World 2009: Mexico
Some alternatives: Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Croatia, Italy, Indonesia
Good luck to all!
