BOLIVIA SAYS NO ...
BOLIVIA SAYS NO : After months of speculation that Bolivia would host Miss Universe 2010, the South American country decided to withdraw its bid to hold the pageant. Bolivia's Minister of Culture Zulma Yugar, photo, announced this decision during a press conference after meeting several times with MUO officials that included MUO President Paula Shugart. Bolivia was ready to spend $7 million to host, but MUO owner Donald Trump's demands - which would have cost at least $20 million - didn't go well with Yugar. Among MUO's demands included the following: more than 600 hours of air-conditioned limousine service, $45,000 on laundry services, and 350 airline tickets amounting to nearly half a million dollars, rent of sound and lighting equipment for a million dollars, and the construction of a stage for the finals for half a million dollars. Add to these demands the employment of international security to protect the delegates, wardrobe, and TV coverage that could cost up to $39 million. And in case Bolivia is unable to fulfill the demands after the contract is signed, the country would have to pay a penalty fee of $3 million - which would go against the policies of the country's political constitution. (El Dia, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, 3/14/2010)
The fact that Bolivia would even consider hosting the pageant is beyond me. The country has never won the crown, much less placed in the top 3, and it is one of the poorest and least developed countries in Latin America. A 2006 report indicates that 60% of Bolivia's population is below poverty line. Estimates indicate that as of 2008, the government owed $4.6 billion to foreign creditors. Lastly, Miss Universe was an odd fit for Evo Morales, an anti-capitalist president who is a strong advocate of indigenous culture. Political opponents accused Morales and his party of using the pageant to court voters in conservative eastern Bolivia ahead of April local elections.

Re: BOLIVIA SAYS NO ...
Why do you assume pageants are capitalist.
Yugoslavia always produced pageant delegates and Chavez praises the Venezuelans when they win.
I support pageants and I personally am a democratic socialist.
I would have loved the pageant in Bolivia, I like to see the countries that in Ireland we don't see on TV much host major events.

Would be amazing however the weather wouldn't be guaranteed to be sunny and nice.
Also we have some feminists here who wouldn't be happy. We have a pageant in Ireland called the Rose of Tralee which is for Irish women and women of Irish decent around the world which doesn't have a swimwear section (only evening gown and interview) and it is opposed by some feminists.
But I would love us to host a major pageant. We have successfully hosted the Special Olympics and the Eurovision Song Contest 7 times, so I don't think the organising would be a problem./

Re: BOLIVIA SAYS NO ...
Because it is marketed as more of a personality contest than a beauty pageant. Although they wear evening gowns also, however there is no actual judging of them in evening gowns. It is broadcast live over 2 nights in September and all the delegates are interviewed on stage in evening gowns and then the judges decide on a winner, no semi finalists or top five, a winner is simply announced.
In Ireland a lot of rural festivals have similar smaller contests but no swimsuit. The started in the early part of the 20th Century when things were more conservative and also in Ireland we don't get the weather for swimsuits
But Miss Ireland obviously has a swimsuit section but isn't televised like the Rose of Tralee is.
