A day like today on July 11th, 1970 Marisol Malaret Contreras was crowned MISS UNIVERSE 1970, being the 1st woman from Puerto Rico that earned the title.
Nowadays Marisol is a successful business woman and she is 62 years old.

Thank goodness she is ALIVE, she was sick with flu and was at the hospital and was released today.

On July 11, 1970 Marisol Malaret was crowned as Miss Universe, so Puerto Rico celebrates today the 43rd anniversary of their 1st Miss Universe. Here is EL NUEVO DIA newspaper from PR the day after she was crowned, the headline says "LA MAS BELLA" (THE MOST BEAUTIFUL)

I recall reading a very good article about her and she seemed VERY humble and down to earth. She was talking about how now the girls and their sponsors spend thousands of dollars on surgeries, etc and how silly she thought it was. I believe she stated the dress she took to Miss Universe was borrowed from a friend and how her aunt bought some jewelry for her to wear (as she couldn't afford to buy it) and she traveled alone without an entourage. Count me as a fan of Marisol and her no nonsense attitude!
