Martina Thorogood (Miss World '99 1st Runner-up)

Martina Thorogood Heemsen is a pageant titleholder, was born in Valencia, Venezuela on February 4, 1975. She is the Miss Venezuela titleholder for 1999, and was the official representative of Venezuela to the Miss World 1999 pageant held in London, United Kingdom in December 4, 1999, when she won the title of 1st Runner Up.


Martina Thorogood is one of my all time favorite Miss World Contestants! She had one of the most seductive stares ever seen in Miss World. Her extremely beautiful face cannot be denied! =)

* The Miss World 1999 pageant was held back to London after 9 years. India’s Yukta Mookhey was crowned Miss World 1999. The second runner-up, Sonia Raciti of South Africa, had been a Miss Universe finalist as well only 6 months earlier.

* On January 25, 2000; Osmel Sousa who is the President of the Miss Venezuela Pageant held a Press Conference at Venevision. He confirmed that Martina Thorogood was rejected by the Miss Universe Organization due to some complaints by National Directors. The Miss Universe Organization decided not to allow Martina Thorogood and her finalists compete at Miss Universe. Osmel Sousa will celebrate a NEW pageant called "Miss Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela". The pageant will take place on Saturday, February 26, 2000 with 10 delegates from previous Miss Venezuela Pageants. The winner should speak english fluently and will be crowned by Osmel himself. On July 15, 2000; the 1st Miss Venezuela World Pageant will take place featuring 26 contestants. Only a winner will be selected (Miss World 2000), no finalists. Miss Venezuela Universe will take place on September 8, 2000 with the remaining 25 contestants. The winner will compete in the 2001 Miss Universe Pageant. Both winners (July and September) will be crowned by the current Miss Venezuela, Martina Thorogood. Mr. Venezuela will take place on October 26, 2000.




* Martina Thorgood Heemsen was supposed to compete at the 2000 Miss Universe Pageant in Cyprus. Speculation is because she is currently 1st runner to Miss World, Yukta Mookey. A new Miss Venezuela Universe will be crowned February 26. In the past, Miss Venezuela World and Miss Venezuela Universe was chosen at the same pageant but for the first time, the two pageants will be separate. Miss Universe Pageant 2000




*In years past, the winner of Miss Venezuela went to Miss Universe and the 1st runner up went to Miss World but Venezuela did not make the semifinals at Miss World in 1997 and 1998 and it was clear that Miss World was going to keep doing that to Venezuela until they sent their winners. In 1999 they did send the winner to Miss World. Martina Thorogood Heemsen originally won Miss Venezuela in September 1999 and competed at Miss World 1999 in December and she placed 2nd at Miss World. When the Miss Universe organization heard of this, Martina was denied entry into Miss Universe for unclear reasons. One suggestion is that they claimed Martina would have an unfair advantage at Miss Universe since she placed so high at Miss World. Another suggestion was that she was first runner up to Miss World and had to be on-hand to replace Yukta Mookhey if anything should happen to her. The first runner up to Martina at Miss Venezuela was Norkys Batista but she was also denied since it was said that Miss Universe allowed only winners, yet several countries sent first runner ups to the pageant, such as Poland and Belgium. On the other hand, Switzerland, Cayman Islands, Lebanon, and Yugoslavia all competed at Miss World 99 and Miss Universe 2000. The end result was that Venezuela held a new pageant with ten candidates that all competed at Miss Venezuela in the past 3 years. Claudia won it and she went to Miss Universe, even though Claudia was a semifinalist in the Miss Venezuela pageant that Martina won.
