Apollo 11 moon landing took a back seat in 1969, when our very own Gloria Diaz won the Miss Universe pageant.

The news report--- July 21, 1969- Convent-bred Gloria Diaz, a raven-haired 18-year old from the Philippines won the Miss Universe pageant Saturday night, becoming the first Filipina to capture this most coveted of all international beauty titles. Miss Diaz, 5-foot-5 and a slender 34 ½ -23- 34 ½, was crowned by the outgoing title holder, Martha Vasconcellos of Brazil. A student who has nine brothers and sisters, Miss Diaz exclaimed, “This is going to be so good for my country and it will change my life. But I’ve never been been happier and I don’t think I will ever be happier.”

Reports from Manila said Filipinos were thrilled by the victory, the second time a Filipina has captured an international beauty tilt. In 1964, Gemma Guerrero Cruz (now Mrs. Antonio S. Araneta Jr.) won the International Beauty pageant at Long Beach. Miss Diaz, who said she didn’t think she would make the top 15, stated that her life’s ambition is to make as many friends as possible. She added, “Oh, I wish my family were here.

Maria Margarita Moran-1973

In 1973, another Filipina beauty, Ms. Maria Margarita (Margie) Moran won the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant.
The 1973 Miss Universe Pageant was held on July 22, 1973 in the ancient Herod Atticus theater at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The pageant was broadcast live worldwide via satellite for the first time. The beautiful broadcast from the Parthenon in Athens, begins a tradition of televising Universe Pageants from exotic locales around the globe.

Best in National Costume went to Maria Rocio Martin of Spain. Miss Congenitality was awarded to Janet Robinson, Miss Chile. Miss Photogenic went to Margarita Moran, Miss Philippines.

For her final question, she was asked, if you had one million dollars what would you do with it? With the love and peace mentality of that decade she said, "I would buy a big house where I can live with all the people I love".

Tidus, can you see Miss Margie Moran's pictures? I cant seem to see it though the upload from the Tinypic worked when I previewed it but now I could not see it.

i can see margie's photos!

tidus: i don't think we will get our 3rd crown anytime soon. we don't have the "sash factor" that we had in the 60's-70's anymore...

because u just need to learn to play the game correct...as greece...germany...czech....europe in general......classy gorgeous ladies in MU DO NOTHING......u have to move "it" like crazy in the preliminaries( and do it nicely....if u dont wanna be like sun from korea who looked like a smurfette in heat).

yeah....take elisa najera for example.....classy lady...but....the moment she went on stage she was playing.....moving "it" with grace, smiling all the way...playing with the audience......the same as dayana,taliana and Marianne. Then take phillipines,greece,germany and czech.....a different approach entirly! moving slow with elegance...and thats all..

we know the rules changed....the questions is why dont the directors realize this......or they do but they just dont care that much????

impressive analysis Tidus..I agree, they need to play 'it'. With regards to the national director of the Phils., we Filipinos are so pissed already!
