Anya Ayoung-Chee is 26 years of age and is a mixture of Chinese, Indian and African heritages. She is Trinidad and Tobago's representative to the 2008 edition of the Miss Universe pageant, of which Vietnam is the gracious host. This thread is dedicated to photos of our rep. taken just prior to her departure to Vietnam and also during the month of activities leading up to the finale on July 15th 2008. Enjoy!
ANYA'S OFF:Anya Ayoung Chee leaves today for Vietnam to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the 57th annual Miss Universe Competition. The event takes place July 13 before an audience of over two billion viewers. Here Anya wears her costume for the show titled Fancy Sailors of the Seas. With her is designer Brian MacFarlane. ANYA: 'Fancy Sailor' of the seas'
Fancy Sailor Mas' as it's commonly known and referred to, has been part of our country's national Carnival celebrations for almost 200 hundreds years. It's considered the mainstay of 'traditional' Carnival as apposed to the fancy beaded versions of costumes that have become the norm in recent years.
The history of the sailor is important as it's meant to depict a theme or even present in its 'decoration' a political statement or message. In years gone, this was considered to be an intellectual concept where the portrayal of the 'fancy sailor mas' was not always clear and the viewer was meant to contemplate the message and purpose of the depiction.
These costumes are considered historically important as each wears a message and from year to year the messages are depicted creatively as part of the costume. There are many versions on permanent display in our National Museum.
For our Miss Universe representative we highlight Tobago's world renowned 'Bucco Reef' and the beautiful seas that surround our islands.
Colours include blues, aqua, turquoises and greens. Fabrics are mainly silk dyed and decorated all by hand. The depiction of this 'Fancy Sailor Mas' is to share the beauty and the ebb and flow of our waters in this national costume.
