Forty eight year old entrepreneur Babylyn Decena Newfield is the country’s first ever representative to the annual Mrs. Grandma UniversePageant to be held in Sofia, Bulgaria from January 19-23 of this year. A successful businesswoman, Babylyn heads the Cartridge World Philippines, a global company that manufactures ink and toner and distributed here and abroad. She is a widow with four children and four grandchildren. “ When my husband passed away, I assumed the role of parent to my children. Of course I went through adjustment because I also have our business to attend to which is our bread and butter. So literally, I juggled from being a mother, grandmother and business woman, it was really hard at first but with the help of my associates, peers and inspiration from my family I was able to pull it through”, Babylyn says during an interview at the Luxent Hotel where a send-off press conference was held to signal the start of her campaign for the title of Mrs. Grandma Universe2016.

Babylyn was officially handpicked by the local franchise owner of the pageant, Mr. Ovette Ricalde, known as the “Mother of All Pageants”in the industry . “ I saw her potential and capability to represent our country. She has all the qualities of an ideal grandmother which the international organizers of the pageant is looking for. She is a class of her own and nobody can stop her to be the best that she can be. I have this gut feel that she will be able to win the competition when she get there in Bulgaria”, Ovette added. Babylyn also make it a point to visit the gym regularly to keep her form in tip-top shape. “I’m into Muai-Thai actually. I will be demonstrating my skills in this sport discipline during the Talent Competition of the pageant. I want to show the people that being a grandma is not a hindrance to show what the young generation can do”, she says.

When she was asked the same question for Pia Wurstzbach during the Miss Universe pageant on why she should be the next Mrs. Grandma Universe she says “ I know to myself that I have the making of an ideal grandmother. Being one is not all about taking good care of your grandchildren but also to show the other people and the universe that I can still be competitive in every goal and objectives that I will set in my life whether personal or professionally,” she ended.
