WORRIES FOR GAY RIGHTS IN 2012 EUROVISION!
After winning the event in Dusseldorf on Saturday, for the first time, Azerbaijan are hosting next year’s Eurovision Song Contest. But now, broadcasters, fans and human rights groups are concerned about the country’s record on human rights. Homosexuality was decriminalised in 2001, but LGBT people in the Muslim country are said to still suffer oppression and harassment. They cannot marry and have no legal protection against discrimination.
Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said LGBT Azerbaijan citizens suffer police harrassment and brutality, blackmail, intimidation, bribery and invasion of privacy and have no legal protection against discrimination. He said: ‘The Eurovision organisers must seek guarantee from the Azerbaijani government that it will respect human rights, that visitors to next year’s competition will not be victimised and that domestic and foreign media coverage of the event will be able to report freely, without harassment..’
Maxim Anmeghichean, of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, said Eurovision organisers should encourage the country to be more open to gay rights. ‘Eurovision as a competition is popular among gay people… This is a good opportunity for Azerbaijan to move towards openness,’ he added.

from SPIEGEL ON LINE!
.....Azerbaijan is also part of the European Union's European Neighborhood Policy program and received €92 million between 2007 and 2010 in EU aid, with another €122.5 million in funding slated between 2011 and 2013. The EU has stated that the primary aim of its aid to Baku is "democratic development and good governance," but Human Rights Watch alleges that "the EU's criticism of (Baku's) authoritarian leadership has been largely muted." It adds that Baku has a history of threatening, harassing and imprisoning journalists and has even defied a European Court of Human Rights order to release the editor of two independent publications. The group claims the publications were forced to close after his imprisonment in 2007 "on bogus defamation and terrorism charges." And in order to prevent the kind of protest waves seen in North Africa this spring, HRW claims authorities arrested a social media activist who had tried to organize an Azerbaijani "day of rage" via Facebook.
Comparisons to Medieval Feudalism
Amnesty International describes Azerbaijan as a country that uses criminal and defamation laws in order to "silence criticism." It also notes that freedom of assembly is heavily restricted in the country, with demonstrations banned in Baku's city center.
The country is ruled by President Ilham Aliyev, who became the country's leader after power was essentially handed over to him in 2003 by his father, dictator Heydar Aliyev, before his death. Even today, Heydar Aliyev, who ruled from 1993 to 2003, is a regular presence in the capital city, with his face splashed on propaganda billboards across Baku.
......
Then there is the issue of homosexuality. Many of the fans who travel to the Eurovision Song Contest each year or view it on television are gay or lesbian. Although homosexuality is not illegal in Azerbaijan, it is not a society that encourages open gayness. As Düsseldorf's Rheinische Post newspaper notes, Germany's Foreign Ministry -- in a travel advisory that also states that a maximum of 125 grams of caviar can be taken out of the country -- warns: "Homosexuality may not be expressly punishable, but it cannot be ruled out that the police might arrest a homosexual couple and only release them after the payment of a sum of money."
Of course, democracy and liberal values are no precondition for membership in the EBU. Belarus, home to Europe's last dictator, Alexander Lukashenko, also made it to the semi-finals at Eurovision before being eliminated from the competition.
...........Next year, the spotlight will be on Azerbaijan with both its boom and its youthful success with Ell/Nikki, but also its political and human rights blemishes. The song contest could be a Grand Prix opportunity for Baku to show a new face of prosperity and success, and for Azerbaijan to polish its reputation. Perhaps the extra international attention will prompt the government to allow more freedoms and put pressure on the regime to better its human rights record.
But the event could also leave Eurovision running scared if the government doesn't take action to improve its international image. For EBU, the event will require a master stroke of diplomacy.

I never liked it and felt embarrassed for Germany!

I alway said this: Europe is not ready for German entries! 5 years later Grazia would have won with this crap!!!
She certainly would not have won! The refrain is only pretty similar to "running scared", that's all. Grazia's version is much worse
I never liked it and felt embarrassed for Germany!

Italy is famous for 3 things: fashion, sports cars and music (just think of Laura Pausini, Paolo Conte, Vasco Rossi,... Guiseppe Verdi!) ! That they produce good music prooves their withdrawel from ESC back in 1997, they wanted to focus on their own national music festival, San Remo, which is so much more popular in Italy than ESC will ever be. They don't need ESC, but ESC needs Italy... Don't call it overrated, they are good!!!
ESC didn't need Italy during last 13 years, you know
But now they're back, you know

Re: EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2011!!!
Magdalena Tul said that she had technical problems during her performance. Huge applause and new acoustic conditions, cauded that she had a problem with the audibility of background music. Only this was related to stress painted on her face because the rest of the song was only an attempt to rescue the honor. When she heard that there were some mistakes with the sound in the depths of the soul she was hoping that she would have the opportunity to repeat her performance, but this didn't happen. She's blaming only herself of the last place cuz she's not self-satisfied.

He cant understand why Europe didn't enthuse about his song, he was a favourite! About Azerbaijan he said that their song is boring. Well, some ppl cant tolerate failure Thank God he didnt win!

Re: EUROVISION SONG CONTEST 2011!!!
First Amaury Vassili has posted a message on his Facebook profile. He tells us that his earpiece was not working at the show in the final. This feature allows artists to hear music and voices. ...,, He tried to manipulate the receiver of the headset and eventually try to better place his voice "at random" and the song has finished better than it began. France3 reportedly filed a complaint with the EBU for this problem, but it has little chance of success because the contest is played.Wojtek wrote:

HE HAD PROBLEMS WITH HIS HEADSET, IT WAS OBVIOUS!
I THINK THAT WHEN SUCH A SERIOUS PROBLEM HAPPENS THE ARSTIST SHOULD REPEAT HIS/HER SONG, AND THAT GOES FOR MAGDALENA, TOO! I THINK THAT HE DIDN'T EXPECTED TO WIN , IT'S THE THE FACT THAT SOMEONE ELSE RUINED HIS CHANCES! AS FOR "15e c'est une place de merde" OK HIS 21!!

At least they offered a song to Russia this year: http://escdaily.com/articles/9175
