Miss Universe 1954

Miriam Jacqueline Stevenson, from South Carolina, USA, competed in the 3rd edition of Miss Universe, in 1954. She edged out the big favorite and still the most talked about Miss Brazil of all times, Martha Rocha.

The American and the Brazilian beauties tied after the judges’ final voting. As Catalina was the major sponsor of the pageant in its early years, the tie-breaking judgment finally came down to who had the better physical figure, which went to Miriam’s favor, for she had the “fitter” hips over Martha Rocha.

Stevenson gave the car she won in her Miss Universe Prize package to Martha Rocha as a consolatory prize.

Stella Márquez (Miss Colombia Universe 1960) who among the semi-finalist that year Miss Universe ,later crowned the first ever Miss International, in Long Beach. Today Márquez is the national director of Binibining Pilipinas.

Laura Martinez Harring (Miss USA 1985), the first Hispanic to win the Miss USA title, Laura Martinez-Harring was born in Mexico. She later became an actress of relative success. Laura was also the first of five women from Texas to consecutively win the Miss USA title.

Intoxicating beauty, Mexican born, studied in Switzerland, Miss USA at 21, semifinalist in Miss Universe 1985, social worker in India at 18, German countess, starting role in the Oscar nominated movie for best director "Mulholland Drive" and winner of the Golden Palm in Cannes, all in one woman.

She is Laura Martinez Harring, the Sinaloense born in Los Mochis Mexico, 1.69 mts, she added her maternal last name of "Martinez" to her Miss & actress name to reinforced her Mexican background

A Back to Back Miss USA tripped in the evening gown competition. Rachel Smith in 2007 & Crystle Stewart in 2008, Smith place 4th runner up while Stewart just ended as top 10 semis

In the 50's Many don’t know, but all judges received a detailed table explaining what perfect measurements were for the time, the famous 90-60-90 cm (bust-waist-hips). Miss Universe was created and sponsored by Catalina swimwear, therefore, it’s not hard to understand why a perfect body was more important than a perfect face back then.

Maribel Arrieta Gálvez (Miss El Salvador Universe 1955) and 1sr Runner up in Miss Universe that year , who was nicknamed “Central America’s Marilyn Monroe”, In some Latin American countries, it was reported that Miss El Salvador lost the crown because she got too much of a tan the day before the pageant, and her skin was actually red when competition time arrived! (She also won Miss Congeniality that year). El Salvador never again placed so high in Miss Universe.

Maureen Hingert (Miss Sri Lanka Universe 1995) and Miss Universe 1955 2nd runner up , the highest placement of Sri Lanka so far in the history. She became a relatively famous Hollywood actress later. In 1982 Edition ,South Africa's low score in swimsuit remains one of the greatest Miss Universe Unsolved Mysteries! South Africa’s elimination, though, remains one of Miss Universe’s greatest unsolved mysteries. She was second in interview (behind Guam) and first in evening gown, but her score in swimsuit was considerably low (7.225, 10th place), which left her in 6th place overall and out of the top 5. Considering that the same panel of judges had voted for her in 1st place in the swimsuit preliminary competition, it is believed that a computer mistake might have ruined her chances in the competition.

Miss Universe 1973 was held at the 2,000-year-old amphitheater of Odeon of Herodes Atticus, at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, on July 21, 1973. It might have been the only show the US audience didn’t see live, as it was broadcast with a 7 hr. time delay. It was the only time Miss Universe was held on continental Europe.

1973 Edition. Miss Israel, Limor Schreibman, for many the number 1 front-runner for the crown, blew the final question proceedings, by first not understanding the question and being sent back in place until they could get a proper interpreter. Then, after the others answered and the interpreter was brought on stage, she suddenly understood the question without his help. She place 4th runner up

1973 Edition, One of the judges, a famous bull fighter by the name of “El Cordobes”, did not have Miss Philippines in his list of favorites until he saw Margarita speaking perfect Spanish. The Spaniard judge, amazed to see an Asian woman speaking fluent Spanish, suddenly move her up to first place in his list!
