Kenisha is one of my favorite MT&Ts of all time. She is the standard by which I evaluate current MT&T. This young lady worked her tail off to whip that body into shape and even after her pageant successes she remained humble.

And one of her idols is Mirriam Quiambao.

Kenisha was one of the most beautiful that year. I felt she should of placed higher than she did. But, she was a gem to look atInfinite wrote:No problem.Trinifan wrote:Thanks for the high resolution pics "Infinite"

The joy of Motherhood

Just recently former Miss Trinidad and Tobago Kenisha Thom-Selvon added another crown to her collection.
This one was different though, nothing like the others.
Representing one's country internationally was the epitome of patriotic pride, a childhood dream come true. And, being a finalist in the top five of the Miss World 2004 and placing in the top seven in the Miss Universe Competition in 2006 definitely put the icing on the cake for the Tobago-born Thom.
But nothing, she says, beats the ultimate prize of becoming a mother.
A year and ahlf ago, she felt nothing could compare to the bliss she felt on becoming Mrs. Selvon a year and half ago, marying Corey Selvon.
But all these moments pale in comparison to the joys of motherhood.
At her HGTV- nspired designer home in St. Augustine,Thom says words cannot describe her emotions when she first set her eyes on her precious Saamantha.
"Honestly, I was tired at first, labour pains still overcame me. But when I held her for the first time there was this flood of emotions- something difficult to explain happened inside my head. Just saying I was happy or satisfied pays no justice to how I felt, it was much more," she says,misty-eyed and clearly still experiencing the baby bliss of a new mom.
Thom had a difficult pregnancy - to the point of complete bed rest in her final trimester and she gives thanks and credit to her husband, mother and other family and friends for their support and who helped make the journey a bit smoother.
"Without my Mom, other family and friends this phase would have been unthinkable. I didn't know this thing (childbirth and pregnancy) was so hard but I'm glad for where it has brought me. Saamantha is my gift from God. "She was worth it all. Now I understand the pain that mothers, who agree to adoption prior to birth experience, feel when their babies are born. It's hard to separate yourself from a part of you, especially when you hear the first cry," she says.
And nothing compares to the reality of pregnancy, and nothing prepraes you for it, not the picture painted by friends, not books or Lamaze classes, she also says.
Now, with a new baby on board, life has certainly changed for the 25-year-old WASA employee.
As she cooed and cuddled her bundle of joy, she says breastfeeding is a priority for her, and a duty she intends to carry out for at least a year.Â
And a feisty four month-old,Saamantha, now at the grabbing and reaching stage, keeps Thom on her feet, but happy.
"Caring for her can be hectic but it's so rewarding. It's like mission accomplished, I always wished for a family of my own and now I have one - I feel so fulfilled. The joy I felt from Ms. World was different. Seeing my daughter's cute smile and anticipating her first tooth, her first step is so exciting," she says.
With a full plate of responsibilities now - mother, wife, Accounting Clerk at WASA, student at the University of the West Indies and an aspiring ACCA certified accountant - life is busy and rewarding for the former T&T Queen.
"When I return to work after maternity leave, I know that it will be life on the fast lane but I know that I can succeed with my determination, faith in God and my supporting cast. My friends at WASA; Karen, Estella, Donna and Mr. Grimes to name a few would definitely be at my side and that coupled with my eager mother-in-law turned babysitter makes me feel optimistic," she says.
But while some things have changed drastically, some facets of Thom's personality have remained the same. She is still the stately stylish woman T&T screamed for at the Ms. World Pageant, though a few pounds heavier.
Dressed in a black mid-thigh linen skirt, red blouse and black bolero jacket, matching makeup and gold bracelets,Thom remains as fashionable as ever.
"I grew up with three brothers so I was always a girl-next-door however I embrace my feminity fully. Dressing up and wearing stylish clothing is something natural for me, it's just who I am," she says.
Thom said she intends to hit the gym pretty soon and adhere to a home-cooked healthy diet. And here Thom reveeals another surprise on her already busy place.
"I always wanted to start my own business and since I am into healthy eating, Corey and I are starting a new restaurant in a few weeks time which promotes healthy recipes," she says.

Kenisha, for me, will always be the best example of what a MT&T should be. She set the standard that all future MT&Ts have to follow.
